so thanks alex for saying it's cool and telling elie and leon! i think too many primary school kids chanting 'where are your wings, man' and 'come on, FLY!' made me think it was the worst english name ever

"Wingman" is a social role a man will take when he goes to a club or bar with an accompanying male. The wingman provides reassurance as they approach women. The wingman is also supposed to talk with the less attractive woman that they approach so that his companion can talk with the other, this is often referred to as "taking one for the team." Usually used as a lighthearted joke, the social role of a wingman is part of the model of courtship as war in which the object is to "score" on the woman. The implication of this combative metaphor is that if the man scores, the woman has somehow lost.
